This year, students and employees of the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové commemorated the November events of 1939 and 1989. Since the holiday fell on a Friday, the student association of the Medical Students Association organized a commemorative meeting in cooperation with the faculty on Tuesday evening, 14 November.
It was held in front of the faculty building in Šimkova Street and the participants, in addition to listening to speeches by Dean Jiří Manďák and ASM President Josef Kutlvašr, could also sing period songs, view a thematic exhibition, period photographs and written memories of veterans or light a candle for the number of those who fought for our freedom and democracy.
This exhibition was subsequently open to the general public in the entrance lobby of the building until the evening of 17 November. Visitors who arrived in the early evening and evening of this festive day had the chance to see the exhibition additionally festively lit in the colours of the tricolour and accompanied by period songs.
On the evening of 17 November 2022, the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové commemorated the International Day of Students and the Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy with a candlelight parade, which was again organised jointly with the University of Hradec Králové. The programme started with speeches by speakers at the UHK campus building, where the participants picked up lit candles and also listened to a short musical performance. Afterwards, the candlelight procession started its journey. The parade route led from the UHK campus through the city centre to our faculty building in Šimkova Street.
At the building of the Faculty of Medicine, the participants were welcomed with short speeches by Dean Jiří Manďák and ASM President Marek Šváb. There was also a musical performance, during which some of the participants sang well-known songs by Karel Kryl together with the musicians, and then the participants laid candles at the bulletin board with an exhibition of period photographs and written memories of the faculty staff about November 1989. At the end of the event, everyone symbolically rang the keys and viewed the roll-up exhibition, which was created years ago in cooperation with the Museum of East Bohemia in Hradec Králové.
Together with the students of the University of Hradec Králové we commemorated the anniversary of the November events on 17 November 2021. The programme began on Václav Havel Square on the campus of the University of Hradec Králové Na Soutoku, where representatives of the University of Hradec Králové spoke to the participants, a short musical performance was performed, rifle salutes were given, participants laid wreaths at the memorial plaque dedicated to the fighters against totalitarianism and wrote messages on an improvised Lennon Wall. Then they lit candles and walked through the city to the building of the Faculty of Medicine in Šimkova Street, which was festively illuminated in the colours of the Czech tricolour as part of the THANK YOU WE CAN event.
In front of the LF HK building, they were welcomed by Dean Jiří Manďák, who thanked the participants for coming and expressed his gratitude for being able to meet freely and commemorate the anniversary in this way, which was not possible during both totalitarian regimes. The participants then rang the keys together and placed candles on the memorial site to commemorate all the citizens who fought for our freedom and democracy. To the sound of the songs of the Velvet Revolution, they then viewed the exhibition roll-ups that deal with the history of the November events at the LF HK.
The traditional Student Concert of the Faculty of Medicine to commemorate the November events took place on Monday 22 November 2021 at the Hradec Králové Philharmonic and was held in a fundraising spirit. The students decided to donate the proceeds from ticket sales to the treatment of a young patient who had cerebral palsy.
The Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové joined the THANK YOU WE CAN initiative and on 17.11.2020 lit up the building of the Faculty of Medicine in Šimkova Street in the colours of the Czech tricolour at the symbolic time of 5:11 pm. It joined other buildings in the Czech Republic.
Also in 2020, we commemorated the anniversary of 17 November with an autumn concert, although due to the epidemic it was held in an unconventional form and with an unconventional cast. As it was not possible to hold a student concert, we recorded a concert by the Hradec Králové Quartet in the premises of the Faculty of Medicine in Šimkova Street to commemorate the November events. It premiered on the Faculty's YouTube channel on 25 November 2020 at 8 pm and we also commemorated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové.
