Department of Languages

The main activity of the Department of Languages of the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové is to provide language teaching for specific purposes, especially Latin medical terminology, professional English and Czech language for foreigners. We provide specialized language training for undergraduate medical students in all types of master and bachelor programmes. Therefore, our research activity is primarily related to language teaching for medical purposes, with teaching methods and study materials. Then it also concerns the linguistic study of medical terminology as such. Furthermore, we cooperate with other departments within our medical faculty and teaching hospital and beyond. The staff of the Institute participates in domestic and international projects and actively participates in domestic and international linguistic conferences.



Main research topics

  • Didactics of Latin medical terminology (and implementation into teaching process with emphasis on empirical approach) PhDr. Pavel Nečas, Ph.D., Mgr. Klára Čebišová, Mgr. Eva Schánělová.

  • Medical terminology with a focus on anatomical nomenclature. History of medicine. PhDr. Pavel Nečas, Ph.D.

  • Activation methods in teaching (especially didactic methods and staging methods, their potential for vocabulary acquisition and communication with patients) Mgr. Dagmar Vrběcká, Ph.D.


Domestic cooperation

  • Collaboration with the Institute of Non-Medical Studies as creators of the teaching materials Professional Latin Terminology and Professional English Language for the new Bachelor's degree programme in Midwifery (Transformation for Universities at Charles University, NPO_UK_MSMT-16602/2022).

  • Collaboration on mini-projects - with the Institute of Medical Biophysics, where professional recordings could be made for the mini-projects Electronic Dictionary for the Czech Language and Phrases in the Hospital scripts; with the Institute of Anatomy and with the Institute of Forensic Medicine on the mini-project Creation of supplementary image materials for the Latin Medical Terminology for Dentists scripts.

  • Collaboration with the medical faculties of the UK and MUNI in the creation, modification, piloting and subsequent sharing of materials and sharing of good practice (textbook Latin Medical Terminology, Conference on Language Teaching at Medical Faculties II).


International cooperation

  • Projects with international participation CZKey and CZECHONLINE (Masaryk University - PhDr. Ivana Rešková, Ph.D., Fachhochschule Burgenland - Prof.in (FH) Mag. Ludmila Waschak, University of Silesia in Katowice - Dr. Małgorzata Kalita, Dr. Joanna Derdowska.

  • Cooperation with UCJ Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martina (Comenius University in Bratislava) in the preparation of teaching materials (PhDr. Mária Bujalková, CSc.).


Achievements

  • 2nd, revised edition of the textbook Latin Medical Terminology and its extension to most medical faculties in the Czech Republic.

  • Completion of the international project CZECHONLINE https://www.czechonline.org/. This is a Czech language portal supported by the European Union. The main output of the project is an e-learning platform for learning Czech language for foreigners at A1 and A2 level, as well as medical, legal and business Czech, all in four language versions.

  • Cooperation with other departments in the development of mini-projects (Institute of Anatomy, Institute of Forensic Medicine, Institute of Non-Medical Studies, Institute of Medical Biophysics, I. Internal Cardiology Clinic).


Dr. Nečas's monograph Ganz und Gar on the languages of the writer Jakub Demel from the perspective of psycholinguistics.

Organization of the Czech&English Meets event in cooperation with the student organization IFSMA and the Department of Promotion and External Relations, which aims to connect the Czech and foreign master's program.
