Department of Pneumology

The Pulmonary Clinic is a clinical unit focused on acute and chronic respiratory diseases and all forms of mycobacterial infections in adult patients. At the same time, the Pulmonary Clinic provides bronchoscopic procedures for adult and pediatric patients on a 24/7 basis. Beyond the above, the Lung Clinic is involved in sleep-disordered breathing (a pneumologist expertly leads the interdisciplinary Sleep Disorders and Biorhythms Centre), is involved in pneumooncology and pneumoonchoscopy, focuses on adult cystic fibrosis and cares for post-COVID patients (a pneumologist leads the interdisciplinary Post-COVID Care Centre). The pulmonary clinic is composed of an outpatient and an inpatient part. The outpatient tract includes two general outpatient clinics, a long series of specialist consulting rooms, a bronchoscopy department and a functional diagnostics department, and last but not least an inpatient unit for the outpatient administration of oncological and immunosuppressive therapy. The inpatient section is divided into a standard inpatient ward and an intensive care unit. The main four functions of the Pulmonary Clinic are diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases, undergraduate and postgraduate education, clinical research and participation in the third role of the university (education of the general public, participation in volunteer work, etc.).

Main research topics

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

  • Bronchial asthma

  • COVID and post-COVID

Scientific research groups

  • COPD Research Group - coordinating the activities of the Czech Multicentre Research Database of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (since 2012) and the pilot project for early detection of COPD in the population at risk in cooperation with the Czech Institute of Health Information Services (since 2018)

  • ASTMA research group - active in the field of difficult-to-treat and severe refractory asthma (among others, coordinating the activities of NCTA - National Centre for Severe Asthma in the Czech Republic, since 2008)

  • Research group dedicated to the issue of post-COVID disability (conducting monocentric research within the FN HK and at the same time coordinating the activities of multicentric monitoring of post-COVID patients in cooperation with the Institute of Asthma of the Czech Republic (since 2021)

Two other areas of clinical medicine are involved in research activities led by colleagues from other departments within the Czech Republic and the Lung Clinic department is part of a broader research team (registry of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis - EMPIRE, LUCAS research project dedicated to prospective follow-up of people with bronchogenic carcinoma).

Equipment

  • Functional laboratory equipment - two laboratories for patients including infectious patients and post-COVID patients

  • Bronchoscopy room equipment - incl. interventional and paediatric bronchoscopy

Achievements

  • Mikuláš Skála - 1st best publication of ČPFS ČLS JEP under 35 years with IF (2021)

  • Vladimír Koblížek - 1st best publication of ČPFS ČLS JEP over 35 years with IF (2020)

  • Vladimír Koblížek - 2nd best publication of ČPFS ČLS JEP over 35 years with IF (2019)

Creation of a unique guideline focused on diagnosis and treatment of COPD (in 2013 with an up-date in 2022) and creation of a similar document in the field of bronchial asthma (in 2017). Both recommendations have been published in IF journals and have numerous citations. In 2006, a unique (from the perspective of the Czech Republic) outpatient clinic dedicated to comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation in people with severe respiratory disabilities was established at the Lung Clinic. In 2018, an internationally unique Park of Pulmonary Rehabilitation was opened on the premises of the Faculty of Medicine of the Republic of HK - here outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation takes place outdoors in real conditions - stairs, hill, walking on uneven terrain.
