Biobank BBMRI

prof. MUDr. Jan Laco, Ph.D.

The Biological Material Bank at the The Fingerland Department of Pathology (FÚP) is primarily focused on collecting and preserving native tumor tissue samples through cryopreservation. Cryopreservation is a method that uses deep freezing at low temperatures in a special device to maintain the tissue's intact antigenic and genetic makeup. Under ideal conditions, tissue treated this way can be stored indefinitely. This method is especially suitable for tumor tissues, where DNA, RNA, or protein analysis of tumor cells is anticipated for diagnostic, prognostic, predictive, and research purposes.

Cryopreservation of tissues at our facility is available to all clinics and institutes of the Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Hradec Králové and the University Hospital Hradec Králové. Currently, this method is used to preserve samples of malignant tumors of the breast, digestive system, head and neck area, ovaries, lungs, and brain, as well as lymph node samples in hematological diseases. In a certain sense, materials from the above-mentioned tumor diagnoses, archived in the form of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue, can also be considered part of the biobank.

The Biological Material Bank at FÚP is involved in the Czech part of a large distributed research infrastructure of pan-European significance – BBMRI (Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure), which aims to create and operate a network of biological material banks for biomedical research.

Sending of material for cryopreservation

The rules can be briefly summarised as follows:

  1. The material is sent to the FÚP exclusively native (i.e. unfixed) as soon as possible after collection.

  2. The material must be accompanied by 2 properly completed guides and the patient's signed informed consent.
